Tailored and Collaborative
In Houston, the Dynamo and Dash FC are partnering with Shell Energy to make their home more sustainable. By using Shell Energy's approach and strategies to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, the aim is to cut both energy use and emissions.
Sustainability Leadership
The clubs had been looking for a new energy provider at the time. Their sustainability ambitions, timed to the city’s part in hosting the 2026 World Cup, aligned perfectly with Shell Energy’s approach. That partnership led to Shell Energy becoming the stadium’s official energy provider, with stadium naming rights given in January 2023.
Demonstrated Expertise
Shell Energy is implementing a three-point strategy for decarbonization: benchmarking emissions, developing renewable solutions, and monitoring and optimizing results. This strategy is being showcased at Shell Energy Stadium. Upon completion, the stadium will feature LED lighting, on-site solar energy, a 100% renewable electricity plan 1 , sub-meter energy monitoring, and EV charging stations for staff.
Here's how that approach worked for Shell Energy Stadium – and how it might work for your venue.
Starting in 2022, the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash FC implemented a variety of integrated energy and decarbonization solutions at the stadium:

The clubs initiated venue-wide LED lighting upgrades, lowering energy consumption significantly versus incandescent lighting
The clubs are installing a rooftop solar array, harnessing the power of the sun to energize the stadium.
The transition to supporting renewable electricity sources further solidified the stadium’s commitment to sustainability.1
The clubs installed a sub-metering system at the stadium, allowing for precise control and optimization of energy usage.
The clubs installed EV charging stations for employees, promoting sustainable transportation options and reducing Scope 2 emissions.
Looking ahead
In collaboration with Shell Energy, Houston’s professional soccer teams are set to meet their 2026 goals. They’re also casting a vision, inspiring other venues, and proving that environmental stewardship and sports can go hand in hand. Shell Energy Stadium is slated as a practice facility for World Cup teams in 2026, elevating its sustainability efforts into the global spotlight.
